Introduction into Globus and transferring data to S3
This KB will show you how to log into Globus, send data to S3, setup flows and track progress within Globus.
- Log into the Globus website
- In the drop down for organizational login select University of Wisconsin-Madison
Viewing S3 Data
- After logging into Globus, select File Manager on the left-hand column menu.
- Select the Search bar next to the Collection field to search for your collection.

- Search for your S3 drive (wisc-s3-smph-<PIs NetID>), or select the Shared With You tab and the S3 collection should appear.
Transferring Data to S3 With Flows
- To create a folder inside S3, right-click inside your S3 collection from within File Manager and select New Folder.
- Select Flows on the left-hand column menu.
- Within Flows, switch to the Library tab.
- Below the search bar select the checkbox for Globus-Provided Flow.
- Then click the Start button on the Move (Copy and Delete) Files flow.
- Within Flows, switch to the Library tab.
- A new dialog page will open and here is where the Source, Destination, and Naming the flow will take place.
- Setting the Source:
- The Source collection will be the ResearchDrive storage that houses all of the active data.
- Example: wisc-drive-<PIs NetID>
- After selecting the collection, select the Browse button to search for the desired files/folders to move to S3.

- Setting the Destination:
- The Destination collection will be the S3 storage that houses all of our archival data.
- Example: wisc-drive-s3-<PIs NetID>
- After selecting the collection, select the Browse button to search for the desired location that the data will be stored.
- The Destination collection will be the S3 storage that houses all of our archival data.
- Setting the Source:

- Under Source and Destination you can label: for Transfer Task (Optional) or for Delete Task from Source (Optional). Checksum Verification is also optional.
- Label This Run is required. We suggest labeling it using recognizable names. (Example: the name of the grant the data was collected for)
- Select the Start Run button to start the flow.
Section 3: Activity/transfer Statuses
- To see your Globus task activity, select Activity on the left-hand column menu.
- Here you can filter you tasks by Type or by Status.

- Select an Activity Task to see the Overview details as well as Event Logs.
- The Overview tab will have more general information like Task Label, Source, Destination, Owner, Files, Files Transferred, Bytes Transferred and more.
- Select an Activity Task to see the Overview details as well as Event Logs.

- Switch to the Event Log to view details for each step and see more details on the actions of the Task/Flow.
