How to use an electric vehicle (EV) charging station
To use the ChargePoint stations at UW–Madison, you must have an active account.
1. Set up a ChargePoint account online
Register at chargepoint.com/activate.
Provide your mailing address to receive a physical ChargePoint card.
Mobile: Download the ChargePoint app and follow the prompts to create an account.
2. Start your charging session
Check which UW campus garages have EV charging stations.
Find a spot. Use the ChargePoint app or website to find an open station in a garage that has EV charging stations.
Enter the garage. Use your parking permit or pull a visitor ticket at the gate.
Park. Pull into a designated EV charging stall.
Start the charge. You can do this in one of three ways:
- Phone tap: Open the app and hold your phone over the reader symbol on the station.
- App remote: Find your specific station in the app and select "Start Charge."
- Card tap: Tap your physical ChargePoint card on the station's reader symbol.
Plug in. Once the station authorizes you, the holster will unlock. Plug the connector into your car.
3. End your charging session
To finish. Tap your card or phone on the station reader again, or select "Stop Charge" in the app.
- Alternative. You can also stop charging by pressing the black button next to the green light on your car's charging port.
Return the cable. Unplug the connector from your car and place it back in the station's holster.
