Geography computer classroom and lab guidelines

Department of Geography Computer Classrooms and Lab

The Department of Geography has computers available for use in the following locations.

Classroom/Teaching Lab

• CS 1370 (formerly SH 380)
• CS 1366

These classrooms are not intended as a drop-in or general use location. When a class is taking place, students who are not enrolled in that class are expected to go elsewhere. Computers in these classrooms may be available outside of scheduled class times (during normal building hours, typically with prior arrangement).

Computer Lab

• CS 1368 (formerly SH M376)
  • Generally open during regular building hours.

Guidelines for use

These locations are intended for use by faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Geography. They are primarily intended for academic use, with priority given to users engaged in educational, research, and university-related activities related to the Department of Geography. They are not available for general use without approval of the department.

Individuals looking for general access computers should use one of the university's InfoLabs. The nearest InfoLab to the CS building can be found at Union South, 1308 W Dayton St. More information about InfoLabs can be found at https://it.wisc.edu/services/computer-labs-infolabs/. NOTE: The InfoLabs may be another resource for Geography students if department resources are unavailable or full. All InfoLab lab computers should have ArcGIS installed and available for use.

Users must use their own university credentials to access lab computers. Sharing login information is prohibited.

Please do not save your data locally to these computers! Classroom and lab computers are subject to being erased or replaced at any time. These computers are also configured to regularly clean out inactive user profiles (accounts that have not been logged in for over 10 days). In any of these situations, any locally saved data will be lost! Please use a USB flash drive or cloud storage (e.g., OneDrive) to store your files/work.

Be sure to save your work and log off of the computer when you are done. You may lose data if you leave a session logged in. Please note that the computers in these locations are restarted nightly.
