WiscIT - Decommission of Cherwell Timeline and Overview

This document provides an overview of the details and timeline for the Cherwell end of life.

Summary

Cherwell's end of life is December 2026, and our licenses expire on December 11th, 2026. Since the go live of WiscIT Powered by Ivanti Neurons on July 29th, 2026, Cherwell has remained available to end users so that they may resolve continue to work their open Cherwell incidents to resolution. During this period of overlap, no/few new incidents have been created in Cherwell, so the number of open incidents has steadily declined.

Service teams must now either resolve their remaining open incidents in Cherwell, or migrate them to Ivanti Neurons. Most service teams have very few open incidents, and will be expected to resolve or migrate them individually. A few service teams have a large number of open incidents (30+);the WiscIT Team will reach out to these service teams to offer a potential export/import of open incidents from Cherwell to Neurons, though this will still require manual review and curation.

What will happen to Cherwell data?

Service teams will have an opportunity to export their historical data before Cherwell becomes inaccessible. After the service is decommissioned, the Cherwell database will continue to be hosted locally, but will generally be inaccessible to service teams. The database will be hosted primarily for use in the DoIT Operations Report and for audit-related purposes if needed.

Before Cherwell is decommissioned, Service Teams will be able to export data that is important for their business needs, e.g. a list of incidents for a given service or team over a period of time. See (Cherwell) WiscIT - Search Overview and (Cherwell) WiscIT - Exporting Search Results for more information.

Important Deadlines and Milestones

Deadline - October 12th - Resolve or Migrate Open Incidents

Service teams should resolve or migrate their open incidents by October 12th. Teams with small amounts of open incidents will need to evaluate and migrate them manually. The WiscIT team will reach out to a few teams with a large amount of open incidents to offer assistance. See WiscIT - Migrating an Incident from Cherwell to Neurons.

Milestone - October 13th - Cherwell "Soft-locked"

After the deadline to resolve open incidents has passed, email processing in Cherwell will be fully turned off and editing rights to incidents and other major objects will be revoked from most users.

Deadline - November 20th - Export historical data from Cherwell

Service teams should export their historical data by November 20th. While users are able to export their data, the WiscIT team can provide guidance where needed on e.g. data model questions.
