WiscWeb - UW Publications migration to UW Theme 2.0

This document is an overview of how UW Publications plugin content will migrate into UW Theme 2.0. It also includes some important considerations for the content. We request that you to thoroughly read the entire document if your content is impacted by this migration.

Migration paths

Citations only

If your publications only show a list of citations (with no images or notes), here's how they will migrate over into UW Theme 2.0: 

  • Content will migrate into a List block

  • The List block will be set to have “more space” between list items (for enhanced readability)

  • The journal title will be linked directly to the provided URL

Example:

A bulleted list of citations with space between each list item.

Citations with notes (no images)

If your publications show a list of citations with images (no notes), here's how they will migrate over into UW Theme 2.0: 

  • Content will migrate into a Paragraph block that is wrapped in a Group block

  • Citations will have alternating gray/white backgrounds (for enhanced readability)

  • The journal title will be linked directly to the provided URL

Example:

Citations that include notes will show an alternating gray/white background with the citation above and the notes below.

Citations with images (no notes)

If your publications show a list of citations with images (no notes), here's how they will migrate over into UW Theme 2.0: 

  • Content will migrate into the Media and Text block

  • Citations will have alternating gray/white backgrounds (for enhanced readability)

  • The journal title will be linked directly to the provided URL

Example:

Citations that include images will show the image on the left and citation on the right. The background will alternate between gray and white.

Citations with images and notes

If your publications show a list of citations with images and notes, here's how they will migrate over into UW Theme 2.0: 

  • Text will migrate into the Paragraph block, images will migrate into the Image block, and everything will be wrapped in a Group block

  • Citations will have alternating gray/white backgrounds (for enhanced readability)

  • The journal title:
     
    • Will be repeated above the citation as a heading

    • Will be linked directly to the provided URL

Example:

Citations that include images and notes will show an image on the left with text wrapping around it. There will also be a heading that repeats the title of the journal that is listed in the citation.

Migration considerations

  • Pagination - Pagination will not be provided in the UW Theme 2.0 version. All content will appear in one big list. 
  • Buttons - Buttons will not migrate unless they were included in the "notes" section. Instead, they will appear as regular links.
  • Individual publication page - The individual publication pages will not migrate. These pages will 404 unless you create redirects for the content in the new site.
  • Images - Images will not link to the journal and will not contain alt text. These decisions were made to improve accessibility. 
    • Image links are repetitive to users navigating with a screenreader
    • Alt text is repetitive to users navigating with a screenreader and can bloat the page
  • PDF/Doc Links - The journal titles will link to the external journal URL or an internal webpage. The citation will not link to a media file like a PDF. 

Migration prep

Before your site is migrated

Before you migrate your site, we suggest updating your publications lists to show any content that may have been hidden in the individual publications pages. 

After your site is migrated

After you receive your newly migrated site URL (but before you begin converting content), we ask that you please: 

  1. Review your publication content

  2. Alert the WiscWeb team of any concerns with the content

It will be easier to remediate any issues before you start migrating/converting other content.

Migration instructions

Generally, publications content should all be converted upon migration. 

Your only steps are to review your publications content after the site is migrated and convert any non-publication content on the page that may be highlighted in pink (step 3 of the general migration instructions doc). 

Creating redirects after your site is re-launched

Your individual publications pages will not migrate (only your citation lists will migrate). If you had been linking directly to any individual publications pages, these links will 404 after launch. Therefore, you may want to set up a redirect for this purpose:

  1. Activate the Redirection plugin in your project site
  2. Select the Add New button at the top
  3. In the Source URL field, type: ^/publications/*



  4. In the URL objects/Regex dropdown, select the Regex checkbox

  5. In the Target URL field, add the full URL of your new publications page



  6. Leave the Group field as "Redirections"

  7. Select the blue Add Redirect button
