WiscWeb - Error establishing a database connection

This document will discuss what the "Error Establishing a Database Connection" is, what it looks like, and what you should do when you see it.

This error reads "Error establishing a database connection."

Issue

This issue occurs when WordPress is having trouble communicating with the database via PHP commands.

Typically in WiscWeb, you'll only see this message if:

  • You enter the incorrect login credentials
  • The database server is down
  • A file gets corrupted as a result of a plugin, theme, or WordPress core update

Resolution

As this issue may be only a momentary blip, we first recommend that you refresh your browser screen a few times to see if the error rights itself.

If that doesn't seem to work and the error persists, please reach out to the WiscWeb Support team right away so that we can identify the issue and remedy it in a timely fashion. Email help@doit.wisc.edu and please include your name, your project name, what you were doing when you experienced the outage, and any other information that may prove helpful.

Tips

  • If you see this error after attempting to login, make sure you are logging in with the correct credentials. If you recently reset your NetID password, double-check to make sure you are entering the new password correctly.
