Overview of Program Code meanings.

Program Code = single digit code that identifies the general purpose of the expense

Program Codes (formerly known as activity codes) are fully defined by UW System here:
https://www.wisconsin.edu/financial-administration/accounting-and-budget-control/chart-of-accounts/

The primary program codes L&S departments use are:
  • 2 - Instruction  -  Expenditures for all activities through which a student may earn credit toward a post-secondary degree or certificate granted by the university.
  • 4 - Research  -  Expenditures for activities specifically organized to produce research outcomes.
  • 5 - Public Service  -  Outreach. Expenditures for all non-credit instruction (except preparatory/remedial instruction) and for activities that are established primarily to provide services beneficial to individuals and groups external to the institution.
  • 9 - Financial Aid  -  All forms of financial aid assistance to students including scholarships, fellowships, and loans.
