Google Gemini AI features and services

Google's Gemini LLM is used in many different Google applications for various uses. As Google releases new features, Gemini will be incorporated throughout the Google Workspace suite (ex: Drive, Docs, Slides). The main version explained in this document is the Google Gemini web app, which has a few different services and language models.

Currently, UW-Madison Google Workspace accounts have access to two Gemini language models:

  1. Gemini 2.5 Flash
    • 2.5 Flash is the most basic model of Google Gemini. It is able to produce answers very quickly to simple questions. It is not as in-depth or as accurate as the other models might be, but it is able to produce text and image response to a large variety of questions.
  2. Gemini 2.5 Pro
    • 2.5 Pro is a step up from 2.5 Flash, as it can do more complex tasks and in-depth reasoning. 2.5 Pro is better for tasks that require enhanced reasoning, such as coding or mathematics. It also has the ability to "think" through its answers to ensure they are correct. Reminder: There is still no guarantee that Gemini generates a correct answer. Fact check anything you receive from Gemini.

Additional features include:

  1. Deep Research with 2.5 Pro
    • Deep Research is a specifically tasked version of Gemini based on 2.5 Pro that is intended to help outline research processes and complete research if asked to. It will explain its researching process and where it gathers its information from so it can be fact-checked. Especially helpful for in-depth and time-consuming research. Reminder: Make sure to check the sources Deep Research uses, as it is not guaranteed to use reputable sources.
  2. Canvas
    • Canvas is an interactive space within Gemini designed to make creating, refining and sharing your work easy. Simply select "Canvas" in your prompt bar and you can write and edit documents or code, with changes appearing in real-time.

Important Note: These models can be dynamically rate-limited, restricting access to certain models for a period of time. Please review the left column and the notes on this page if you would like to learn more.
