Chrome, Edge, and Safari - Search Redirects to Yahoo

This documents helps users resolve where searches are unexpectedly redirected to Yahoo in their Chrome, Edge, or Safari browsers.

Chrome

  1. Clear cache and cookies. For instructions on how to do so, see the following article: Clearing Browser Cache and Cookies.
  2. After you have cleared Chrome's cache and cookies, reset the browser settings. For instructions on how to do so, see the following Google Support page: Reset Chrome Settings to Default.
  3. If none of the above steps have resolved the issue, try uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome. This can help remove persistent malware or corrupt settings.
  4. Use antivirus software or your computer’s built-in antivirus to scan for and remove malware or suspicious files. Be sure to check and remove unwanted browser extensions as well.

Edge

  1. Clear cache and cookies. For instructions on how to do so, see the following article: Clearing Browser Cache and Cookies.
  2. After you have cleared Edge's cache and cookies, reset the browser settings. For instructions on how to do so, see the following sub-steps
    1. In your Microsoft Edge browser, click the three dots in the top right corner.
    2. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
    3. In the left-hand side menu, click Reset settings.
    4. Choose Restore settings to their default values.
    5. In the pop-up window, click Reset to confirm.
  3. If none of the above steps have resolved the issue, try uninstalling and reinstalling Edge. This can help remove persistent malware or corrupt settings.
  4. Use antivirus software or your computer’s built-in antivirus to scan for and remove malware or suspicious files. Be sure to check and remove unwanted browser extensions as well.

Safari (macOS)

  1. Clear cache and cookies. For instructions on how to do so, see one of the following articles, depending on your version and operating system:
    1. Safari 5 (Mac) - Clearing Cache and Cookies
    2. Safari 8.0 - 10.0 (Mac) - Clearing Cache and Cookies
    3. Safari 10.0.1+ (Mac) - Clearing Cache and Cookies
  2. After you have cleared Safari's cache and cookies, reset the browser settings. For instructions on how to do so, see the following article: Safari 8.0+ (Mac) - Restoring the Default Settings.
  3. Unlike other web browsers, Safari does not have a full browser reset option. The closest equivalent is to clear its cache and cookies, as directed in step 1 of this section.
  4. Use any antivirus software you have (i.e., Malwarebytes) to scan for and remove malware or suspicious files. Be sure to check and remove unwanted browser extensions as well.

Note: Malware can pretend to be other software on your computer. For example, if you find “McAfee” files on your device, and you do not use McAfee, remove those files.
