UW-Madison Google Workspace - Transfer folders and files from My Drive to Shared Drives
Google does not provide the option to drag and drop folders from My Drive to Shared Drives. However, files can be dragged and dropped into Shared Drives.
Individuals attempting to drag and drop folders from My Drive to Shared Drives will receive the following error message, "Folders can't be moved into Shared Drives yet."
Workarounds
Below are two workarounds for transferring folders and files from My Drive to Shared Drives:
Workaround 1: Download My Drive folders and files and upload to Shared Drives.

Option 1: Download My Drive folders and files to your desktop. Learn more.
Option 2: Use Google Takeout*. Learn how to use Google Takeout.
- *Note: Google Takeout will only export Google files that you own. It will not export Google files that were shared with you.
- Upload
Using the file you just downloaded, upload your UW-Madison Google Workspace My Drive folders and files into Shared Drives. Learn more.

Workaround 2: Install Google Drive File Stream
Download and install Google Drive File Stream client.
Open Google Drive File Stream drive.
Open a browser and log into your UW-Madison Google Workspace account.
Drag and drop folders and files between the Google Drive client and your browser.
