Microsoft 365 announced on August 23, 2021, through in-app messaging, for Office apps for Android (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Union, OneNote and Outlook) on Chromebooks that the apps will no longer be available in the Google Play store.

Users will be able to access Microsoft 365 from the web. For Chromebook devices using Microsoft Intune's app protection policies (APP, also known as mobile application management (MAM)), app protection policies will no longer apply for Android Microsoft 365 apps once they are removed from the Google Play Store and can no longer receive updates.

Note: This change does not affect Android devices.

  • Key points:
    • Major: Retirement
    • Timing: November 1, 2021
  • How this affects my organization:

Office apps for Android on Chromebooks will no longer receive updates beginning November 1, 2021. Additionally, users will not be able to download Office apps for Android on Chromebooks once they have been removed from the Google Play store.

Important: Existing Office apps for Android installations will continue to function but will not receive updates or security fixes.

What do I need to do to prepare:

Users should uninstall Office apps from their Chromebook device and instead start using Office Web apps: How to access Microsoft Office on a Chromebook.
