Google Drive for Desktop Discontinuing Google Photos Backup

On August 10, 2026, the Google Drive for desktop application will stop supporting automatic photo backups to Google Photos. Learn more.

Individuals using the Google Drive for desktop app will see an in-app notification about the upcoming discontinuation and will be advised to back up photos directly to Google Photos before automatic syncing stops. This is not recommended. 

Reminder: Google Photos is a non-core app and is not supported for UW-Madison Google Workspace accounts. All work and academic files from Google Photos should be move to My Drive or a shared drive. Learn more about preserving photos

Less than 1% of UW-Madison Google Workspace accounts will be impacted by this change. Affected accounts were notified and advised to do the following: 

  1. Disable backup services: Folders syncing to Google Photos via the Google Drive for desktop app need to be disabled. 
    • Open Google Drive for desktop.
    • Click Settings > Preferences.
    • Click Settings > Search for Google Photos.
    • Uncheck Upload photos and video to Google Photo.
    • Click Done.
  2. Remove all photos from Google Photos: Move all work and academic related photos to Google My Drive or a Shared Drive. Learn more.

Photos that were backed up to Google Photos via the Google Drive for desktop app will not be deleted.
