There appears to be an issue with new installations of Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) on systems running Windows 8 that have received KB2781197, a Windows Defender update released 3/12.

If this update is installed before the installation of SEP, the SEP installation will fail. The solution is to navigate to the Windows 8 Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Installed Updates, and remove KB2781197. The SEP installation should then function normally, and KB2781197 can be reinstalled using Windows Update. More information is available here: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH203996 Existing SEP installations are unaffected, and the problem does NOT affect Windows 7, Vista, or Windows XP. Hopefully this will be resolved in the next round of Patch Tuesday updates from Microsoft, but no information about a timeline for a fix is currently forthcoming.
