Resnet's office reported to us that when a customer runs adaware on an xp machine, and it removes a specific piece of spyware, it changes something in the registry that causes a user to get a error message saying "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket" when they try to release and renew. Click on the link for more info.

The fix can be downloaded here: http://www.housing.wisc.edu/resnet/WinsockXPFix.zip

If a customer wishes to download it, have them do the following:

  • Go to this address: http://www.housing.wisc.edu/resnet/
  • Click on downloads
  • Have them scroll down to OS fixes, and click on the link that says '"An Operation Was Attempted On Something That Is Not A Socket" Fix'.

NOTE: that error message is what shows up when you do a release/renew in the command line. It will not necessarily be the exact same error message when you do a repair in Network Connections.
