There will be a network outage between 3-9 AM on Sunday (04/18/04) for equipment testing.

The network outage aborted from last month has been rescheduled for Sunday, April 18th from 3:00a-9:00a. The outage will be used to gather addtional information about equipment problems DoIT experienced in January. This outage will not only affect the network on the DoIT platform but will also affect the campus backbone network.

The intention of the outage is to force network component failures under controlled circumstances, so that we can gather information and troubleshoot to decrease the likelihood of unexpected failures later on.

If the equipment performs as expected, we anticipate only sporadic outages, lasting perhaps less than 1 minute each, 4-6 times between 3:00a and 6:00a. However, since performance is unpredictable (and is one of the motivations for the testing), those sporadic outages could last up to an hour or more, multiple times, between 3:00 and 6:00a. For future scheduled outages, the Campus Network Services group is looking at Sunday mornings, from 3:00-9:00. Although the time would be set aside for network outages, it would be used only when necessary.
