America Online began blocking the main WiscWorld SMTP servers (used by most UW email users). In the short term, those affected can reconfigure the SMTP server setting in their email client as: smtp2.services.wisc.edu

DoIT just learned that America Online began blocking the main WiscWorld SMTP servers (used by most UW email users). AOL apparently did this because they believed that the servers were open relays. In order to get off their blacklist (and others), we needed to further restrict use of the WiscWorld SMTP servers.

Consequently, the WiscWorld SMTP servers will now only accept email originating from campus IP addresses.

This change will not affect most WiscWorld email users. But it will affect those using WiscWorld from non-campus IP addresses. In the short term, those affected can reconfigure the SMTP server setting in their email client as: smtp2.services.wisc.edu

Please understand that this is a more open mail server and may soon be included by some blacklist services. We will make other recommendations as the situation changes.

If you change your setting to SMTP2 and still encounter problems, you can contact the DoIT help desk for assistance (264-HELP).
