America Online recently began blocking the main WiscWorld mail servers. Users from non-campus IP addresses, e.g. Charter cable modem, TDS DSL, Chorus, etc. need to use "smtp2.services.wisc.edu" for SMTP server.

DoIT has recently learned that America Online began blocking the main WiscWorld mail servers used by most UW email users. In order to ensure the continued operation of the WiscWorld email system, we needed to make an emergency configuration change to the WiscWorld servers.

The change will affect those using WiscWorld from non-campus IP addresses, e.g. Charter cable modem, TDS DSL, Chorus, etc. In the short term please reconfigure the "SMTP server" setting in your email client, e.g. Eudora, to:

smtp2.services.wisc.edu

Alternatively, you may be able to update your SMTP server setting to a server provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

If you change your settings and still encounter problems or need assistance with this change, you can contact the DoIT help desk at 264-4357.
