Student accessibility & usability barriers
Box has two user interfaces, the main interface and an alternative interface with limited functionality that is designated as an "accessible interface." While this secondary interface may be easier for some users to navigate, some features are missing in this version that exists in the main user experience. Accessibility findings have been sent to the vendor with a request to make the main user experience accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. Since March 2020, significant improvements were made by the vendor and ongoing work is in progress to make this user experience accessible to all users. (Per these updates, this document was updated with the resolved accessibility findings removed on 9/24/2020.)
The alternative interface is missing functionality
A common downside of having an "alternative accessible" interface is that separate is never equal and one interface (usually the alternative one) falls out of parody or repair quickly and is deprioritized for remediation. The following functionality is missing from the alternative Box interface:
- Get Help
- Profile options (found by clicking on profile icon)
- Missing “Recents”, “Synced”, “Trash”, and “Notes” app
- Missing option to copy folder contents
- Additionally, the "close" button in the alternative Box interface is unresponsive. The “close” button on the “Manage Collaborators” pop up is also unresponsive on the alternative Box interface.
Box becomes less readable when magnified between 200-400%
Users who have low vision may need to magnify Box in order to use it. However, Box does not magnify well on both interfaces. When magnification was increased to 400%, the interface at desktop resolution doesn’t reflow to allow the user to reach all the content on the screen. This can cause users with low vision to be unable to magnify as needed to use the tool.
