Wireless UWNet - Differences Between "UWNet..." SSIDs

This document outlines the differences between various wireless SSIDs broadcast on the UW-Madison campus.

DoIT is currently in the process of upgrading the UWNet wireless infrastructure to campus buildings. The format of the network SSID broadcast in a given building depends on whether its infrastructure has been upgraded. It also impacts how users of that network authenticate.

  1. Wireless users at buildings with the legacy wireless system (also know as Cisco wireless or old wireless) will see the SSID UWNet-building name. They will log in using a NetID or a Guest NetID.

  2. Wireless users at buildings with upgraded wireless (also known as Aruba wireless or new wireless) will see the SSID UWNet. They will log in with a NetID or use an email address for guest access. They will also see an SSID for eduroam. For details on eduroam, see: eduroam - Accessing eduroam.

Authentication Details:

  1. Legacy wireless ("UWNet-building name"): users with NetIDs are authenticated for one day.

Users without NetIDs can request a Guest NetID (see [Link for document 3455 is unavailable at this time.] for details). Guest NetID users login in the same manner as NetID holders.

  2. Upgraded wireless ("UWNet"): users with NetIDs are authenticated until the end of the semester or until they move to a building with legacy wireless (at which point they must authenticate on the legacy system). Once they authenticate, they can roam to other upgraded ("UWNet") buildings without needing to reauthenticate.

Guests logging in with an email address will remain authenticated until the next morning or until they login at a legacy building.
