Wireless UWNet - Types of Access

This document describes the different types of wireless access provided on the UW campus.

UWNet

  • SSID: UWNet
  • Also known as: Aruba, New Wireless, Upgraded Wireless
  • Locations: Campus buildings broadcasting the SSID of UWNet with no building name appended at the end
  • Includes NetID or guest login (replaces separate guest wireless system)

Remainder of the semester or until user moves to a building with UWNet legacy system (Note: User remains authenticated for the remainder of the semester in Aruba buildings) UW-Madison faculty, staff, students or Guest NetID holders

Email address

24 hours or until user moves to a building with a UWNet legacy system Guests without NetIDs

UWNet Legacy System

  • SSID: UWNet-BuildingName
  • Also known as: Cisco, classic wireless, legacy wireless
  • Locations: Campus buildings broadcasting the SSID UWNet-BuildingName

Login Type

Intended Users

NetID

Until user moves to a different building location UW-Madison faculty, staff, students, Guest NetID holders

Guest NetID

  • SSID: Any of the above
  • Locations: Campuswide

Intended Users

N/A

Issued for up to 30 days but login is dependent on wireless system Visitors to UW Departments (e.g., guest scholars, prospective students, etc)
