Connecting to Windows File Shares

This document details the ways to connect to a Windows file share in the DoIT Active Directory in various operating systems.

Windows 7

  1. From the Start menu, right-click Computer. Then click Map Network Drive.
  2. Choose an available letter from the Drive dropdown menu.
  3. Enter the file share server address in the Folder field. If you do not know the address you need to connect to, please contact the DoIT Help Deskfor assistance. Click here to jump to a list of DoIT Active Directory file share server addresses.
  4. Check the Reconnect at logon box to connect each time you log into your computer.
  5. Check the box labeled Connect using different credentials.
  6. Click Finish. You will be prompted to enter your credentials.
  7. Enter the User name and Password for the file share you are connecting to.
  8. Check the Remember my credentials box if you don't want to enter your user name and password each time you connect.
  9. Click OK to log in. If you were not able to connect, please see DoIT Active Directory - Troubleshooting File Share Connection Problems for assistance.

Windows 8

  1. Navigate to the Start screen and type Computer to search automatically.
  2. Right-click Computer from the Apps screen.
  3. Click Map Network Drive from the menu. A new screen will appear.
  4. Choose an available letter from the Drive dropdown menu.
  5. Enter the file share server address in the Folder field. If you do not know the address you need to connect to, please contact the DoIT Help Desk for assistance. Click here to jump to a list of DoIT Active Directory file share server addresses.
  6. Check the Reconnect at logon box to connect each time you log into your computer.
  7. Check the box labeled Connect using different credentials.
  8. Click Finish. You will be prompted to enter your credentials.
  9. Enter the User name and Password for the file share you are connecting to.
  10. Check the Remember my credentials box if you don't want to enter your user name and password each time you connect.

Windows 10

  1. From the Start menu or taskbar, open or search File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to This PC.
  3. Select the Computer tab at the top of the window, then select the Map network drive option.
  4. Choose an available letter from the Drive drop-down menu.
  5. Enter the file share server address in the Folder field. If you do not know the address you need to connect to, please contact the DoIT Help Desk for assistance. Click here to jump to a list of DoIT Active Directory file share server addresses.
  6. Check the Reconnect at logon box to connect each time you log into your computer.
  7. Check the box labeled Connect using different credentials.
  8. Click Finish. You will be prompted to enter your credentials.
  9. Enter the User name and Password for the file share you are connecting to.
  10. Check the Remember my credentials box if you don't want to enter your user name and password each time you connect.

Windows 11

  1. From the Start menu or taskbar, open or search File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to This PC.
  3. At the top of the menu, select the More icon (3 dots) then select Map network drive. (If the option is not there, alternatively you can right click on This PC and select the Map network drive option there.)
  4. Choose an available letter from the Drive drop-down menu.
  5. Enter the file share server address in the Folder field. If you do not know the address you need to connect to, please contact the DoIT Help Desk for assistance. Click here to jump to a list of DoIT Active Directory file share server addresses.
  6. Check the Reconnect at logon box to connect each time you log into your computer.
  7. Check the box labeled Connect using different credentials.
  8. Click Finish. You will be prompted to enter your credentials.
  9. Enter the User name and Password for the file share you are connecting to.
  10. Check the Remember my credentials box if you don't want to enter your user name and password each time you connect.

Mac OS 10.7+

  1. Open Finder.
  2. In the top menu bar, click Go and then click Connect to Server. A new window will appear.
  3. Enter SMB:// followed by the file share server address in the Server Address field. If you do not know the address you need to connect to, please contact the DoIT Help Deskfor assistance. Click here to jump to a list of DoIT Active Directory file share server addresses.
  4. If you'd like to save this connection to use again later, click the + box to add it to your favorite server list.
  5. Click Connect.
  6. If prompted for your credentials, click the Registered User radio button in the Connect as section.
  7. Enter the Name and Password for the file share you are connecting to.
  8. Check the Remember this password in my keychain box if you don't want to enter your user name and password each time you connect.
  9. Click Connect to log in. If you were not able to connect, please see DoIT Active Directory - Troubleshooting File Share Connection Problems for assistance.
