This document describes the use of Papercut for pay-for-print services

Print from a Lab Computer

 

Printing Process on an Auto-login Desktop

  1. Once a print job has been sent to the desired printer a “New Print Job - Alternate Credentials” window will appear. It may take a bit to load.
  2. Review the information on the popup. Please note it will inform you on how much the print is going to cost. 
  3. Enter in the textbox the NetID or 10-digit Print Card Number that will be paying for the print.
    1. Please note a Print Card is not the same as a WisCard number. 
  4. Click "OK".  
  5. Go over to a print release and sign in with the same account that was entered in step #3. 
    • The popup that shows up when someone prints a job to a printer before they can walk to the release station.

Printing Process on a Login Desktop

Paying with the Same NetID as Logged in With

  1. Once a print has been sent to the desired printer a “Printing Confirmation” window will appear. It may take a few seconds. 
  2. Please check if the information on the print job is correct. Note it will let you know how much the print is going to cost on this screen. 
  3. If you would like to pay with the same NetID that you signed into the computer with click "OK" at the bottom right.
  4. Go over to a print release and sign in with the same NetID that was listed above. 
  5.  
    • The popup someone would see when they go to print. What is important about this page is to in the textbox type in a NetID.

Paying with a Print Card or a Different NetID than the One Used to Login to the Desktop 

  1. Once a print has been sent to the desired printer a “Printing Confirmation” window will appear. It may take a few seconds. 
  2. Please check if the information on the print job is correct. Note it will let you know how much the print is going to cost on this screen.
  3. Using the drop down menu to select "Specify a different NetID or Print Card Number".
  4. Printing pop up, this shows the dropdown menu.
  5. Click "OK".
  6. Enter in the Print Card Number or a different NetID that was used to login to the desktop into the textbox. (The screenshot below shows off adding a NetID)
  7. The popup someone would see when they go to print. What is important about this page is to in the textbox type in a NetID.
  8. Click "OK".
  9.  Go over to a print release and sign in with the same Print Card account or NetID that was entered in step #5 above. 

Notes  

  • Make sure the same NetID/print card number that was used to send the job to the printer was used on the release station.
  • Make sure the desired printer was selected for the job to be sent to. 
  • If the print job does not print and the two notes above are correct, have a staff member check on the paper and ink in the printer.
 

Print from a Personal or Mobile device

 
  1. Set up the PaperCut Mobility Print printer(s) on your device.
    • Go to PaperCut Mobility Print Setup
    • See Installation Instructions below for directions specific to your device type
    • You must be on campus and connected to the campus wireless to print
    • You should only need to do this step once - though you can re-run the installers if anything changes or you need a different queue than you set up initially.
    • Note: If you intend to pay using a Print Card instead of your Wiscard or Wiscard Print account (this is unusual), you will need to enter the Card Number and PIN instead of your NetID when it asks for authentication.

  2. Print to the desired queue from your device
  3. Release your Print Job

Installing the PaperCut Mobility Print queues on your device

Windows

  1. Go to PaperCut Mobility Print Setup
  2. Click "Download"

    Download page for Windows Mobility Print Installer.  Shows 2 steps.  The first is a download button with the text "Click the button below to download Mobility Print".   The second step says "Run the Mobility Print installer to install your printers."

  3. Run the downloaded file. 
    • Note that the file is named something like "pc-mobility-print-printer-setup-<version>[papercut-print.doit.wisc.edu].exe.  Do not rename this file.  If your browser automatically renames this file, use a different browser.  The executable uses the file name to know what print server to connect to.

  4. Enter administrator credentials as necessary and click through the boxes to allow the app to make changes to your device, to use your desired language, and to accept the license agreement.

  5. Select the queue(s) you want to add to your device.  Note that if you later realize you want different ones, you can just re-run the installer.

  6. Enter your your NetID and Password.  In the unusual event you intend to pay with a Print Card, enter the Card Number and the PIN on your card instead.

  7. Click "Finish" 
    1. You should now see the queue(s) you added as options to select for your printer when you  to print a document.
    2. These queues should be easy to spot as they should have "[PAPERCUT-PRINT](Mobility)" on the ends of their names
    3. Once you no longer need these queues, you can just delete the printers.  No other uninstallation is necessary.

  1. Go to PaperCut Mobility Print Setup
  2. Click "Download"

  3. Click the download .dmg to mount the image. 
  4. Note that the file is named something like "pc-mobility-print-printer-setup-<version>[papercut-print.doit.wisc.edu].dmg.  Do not rename this file.  If your browser automatically renames this file, use a different browser.  The installer uses the file name to know what print server to connect to.

  5. Run the .pkg to install the queues.  Click continue through the boxes to agree to the terms and select an install location.  Enter administrator credentials for your mac when prompted.

  6. You should now see all the PaperCut Mobility queues.  Note that you can just re-run the installer if you delete any of these and later need them or if the published queues change and you need updated ones.

iOS (iPhones and iPads)

  1. Go to PaperCut Mobility Print Setup and click the "Download" button.

    You must do this using Safari on your device.  Other browsers will just download a file.

  3. Open Settings on your device.  Depending on the version, it may inform you that a profile was downloaded as highlighted in the screenshot below.  In other version you may need to go to "General > VPN & Device Management" or "General > Profile" to find it.

  4. Select the "PaperCut Mobility Print for iOS" profile and select "Install"

Android

  1. Go to PaperCut Mobility Print Setup on your Android device and click on the "Install or update" link.
  2. If prompted to Open with Play Store select "Just once".



  3. When the Play Store opens click on the Install button to install the app.
  4. After the Mobility Print app has installed re-open the PaperCut Mobility Print Setup link and again click on the "Install or update" link.  This will update the Print Mobility app for our campus configuration.  If the following prompt appears select the "Mobility Print" option and the "Just Once" action to continue.

  • When the installation has completed you should see the following screen.



  • The setup portion of the process is complete.

 

Printing to the PaperCut Mobility Print queues from your device

Windows

  1. With the document open choose "File > Print".  You can often use Ctrl-P as well.  The exact buttons and dialog you're presented with will vary with the application you're printing from.
  2. When presented with a list of printers, select the appropriate queue.
  3. You have a limited selection of options.  Be aware that you'll have the ability to select color vs. black & white and two-sided regardless of whether or not the printer that you're ultimately printing to supports those options.
  4. Once you've hit print, go to a release station to pay for and release your job.

  2. A print dialog will open with a preview of your printed document.  The options you see may depend on the app you're using.
  3. Select the desired queue from the "Printer" dropdown.
  4. You have a limited selection of options.  Be aware that you'll have the ability to select color vs. black & white and two-sided regardless of whether or not the printer that you're ultimately printing to supports those options.
  5. You will be prompted for a Name and Password for the printer.  Enter your your NetID and Password.

  6. Once you've hit print, go to a release station to pay for and release your job.

iOS (iPhones and iPads)

  1. Click the Share button.  Where this button is varies by app.

  2. Scroll down and select "Print".
  3. Select your desired Printer.

    You have a selection of other options.  Be aware that you'll have the ability to select color vs. black & white and two-sided regardless of whether or not the printer that you're ultimately printing to supports those options.

  4. The first time you print, you will be prompted for credentials.  Enter your NetID and password and tap OK.
    • In the unusual event you intend to pay with a Print Card, enter the Card Number and the PIN on your card instead.
  5. Once you've hit print, go to a release station to pay for and release your job.

Android

    1.  Click on the Share button, which may look similar to the following.
    2. When the dialog box opens select the Print option.



    3. When the print page has appeared click the down arrow by "Save as PDF", which will list the printing options.





    4. Once the printer has been selected press the pastel colored icon on the right side of the screen.



    5. Click OK on the Mobility Print message.



    6. Your initial print will require you to enter credentials.  When presented with the screen below enter you NetID in the Username field and your password in the Password field.




      In the unusual event you intend to pay with a Print Card, enter the Card Number and the PIN on your card instead.

     

    Print queues at each location

    • Broadly speaking "Infolabs-B&W-Mobile" and "Infolabs-Color-Mobile" are for printing in the InfoLabs, "Libraries-B&W-Mobile" and "Libraries-Color-Mobile" are for printing in campus library locations, and "Departmental-B&W-Mobile" and "Departmental-Color-Mobile" are for printing in the rest of the locations that support PaperCut around campus.

    Your PaperCut Account and History

    • When you log into a lab machine running the PaperCut Client, you can click the Papercut Logo in the system tray or notification area to open the client:

      Balance

      The funds displayed is the sum of both your Wiscard balance, your Wiscard Print account balance, and any other quota you may be granted in the PaperCut system. 
    • You can also access your PaperCut account information through the web portal at print.wisc.edu by logging in with your NetID.

      This gives a slightly more detailed breakdown of your balance and you can also see your transaction history, recent print jobs, and it provides access to submit PDF and images to the printers via WebPrint.
    • When you print a job, fund are first drawn from any PaperCut quota you might have, then from your Wiscard Print account, then from your Wiscard account if available.
    • If your balance initially shows $0 - click the Refresh button and it should usually update your information.  If it is still $0 after refreshing and you believe you have money in your account, confirm your eligibility and then Get Help from DoIT

      Add Money to your Account

      Note: If you've recently graduated, you are still be able to add funds via these links but may no longer be eligible to actually use the money to print with PaperCut and would see a $0 balance.  

      • Print Account - Add Money

        • Print Account funds can only be used for printing on campus.
        • No Fee for adding money to your Print Account.
        • Minimum of $5.00 added at a time.
        • Once money is added to your Print Account, it cannot be refunded or transferred to another individual or account.
        • To check the balance currently available in your Print Account, you can view it on the computer at a Pay-for-Print release terminal after logging in with your NetID and password (or card number and pin for guest/departmental print cards). You can also view it after swiping a card (either Wiscard or guest/departmental print card) on a reader attached to a copier.
        • To print from your personal computer once funds have been added, follow the instructions at Pay-For-Print - Mobile Printing
      • Wiscard Account - Add Money

        • Wiscard Account funds can be used for a variety of purchases on campus
        • Deposit into the account with electronic check for free.
        • 2% fee for adding money to Wiscard Account via credit card.
        • Minimum of $15.00 added at a time.

      • B&W: $0.07 per page/per side

        Requesting a Refund

        • Log into your Papercut portal 
        • In the Recent Print Jobs menu, find the job that gave you issues, click "Request refund"

      Eligibility to use Pay-For-Print

      Please note: Recent graduates can add funds to their Wiscard but will no longer be eligible to use it for printing with PaperCut.

      Populations eligible to use PaperCut Pay-For-Print include:

      • Actively enrolled UW Madison students (not graduated)
      • UW Madison Faculty
      • UW Madison Staff
      • UW Madison Emeritus Faculty
      • UW Madison Emeritus Staff

      Troubleshooting Common Issues

      Hold for Authentication Error 

      Why this error is occurring?

      • Either the NetID or Password was typed in or saved incorrectly.

      What to do to Fix this Error?

      • First, spot the error occurred by looking at the printer icon in the bottom right corner.

      • Click into the icon. The following will appear.

      • Click on the little reload button on the far right and a box will pop up. See the blue highlighted box.

      • When the box pops up, make sure to type in the NetID and Password carefully.

        •  Tip: Do not check the “Remember this password in my keychain” if you are not 100% sure the NetID and Password is correct.
      • Make sure the printer icon at the bottom right does not look like it did, and then disappears quickly. 
      • Go over to the desired print release station and login with NetID and Password and release the print.
