Funding ADA Accommodation for L&S Employees
From time to time, departments are asked to provide reasonable accommodation for employees with disabilities, to ensure equal employment opportunities and to provide a workplace environment in which our employees can be successful. Sometimes these requests are communicated informally and accommodated within ordinary departmental processes and decisions (e.g., an employee expresses a preference for a particular type of keyboard, to reduce aggravating an old injury). Sometimes these requests are communicated formally, in a process that involves certification of the need from a treating specialist and employee submission of the Disability Accommodation Request form through the L&S Division Disability Representative (DDR) for his or her employment group (faculty, academic or classified staff, or graduate assistant).
For the current list of L&S DDRs, please see doc L&S Disability Accommodation - Employment.
For accommodation requests for Assistant Professors, L&S will cover the full amount. Please work with Beth Baldowin on this process.
For all other employees (including tenured professors), the department is responsible for minimally the first $1,000 worth of expenses for accommodation. If the department is experiencing financial hardship and does not have sufficient resources available to pay for the accommodation, please reach out to Jennifer Klippel to request L&S support. The request should include:
- type of employee the accommodation is for (i.e., faculty, academic staff, university staff, graduate student) – for confidentiality, please do not include the name of the employee
- type of expenses (i.e., travel, furniture, etc.)
- proposed dollar amount of request
Please remember that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requests for accommodation must be kept confidential, and the L&S DDR should be the point of contact.
If you have questions about L&S funding for accommodation, please contact Jennifer Klippel.
If you have questions regarding the accommodation process, please contact your L&S DDR.
