Student Privacy Rights (FERPA)

Information about FERPA.

As a student, you have privacy rights regarding your educational records protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Some information, like your name and email address, is considered public (directory) information and is available for others to access. If you wish to withhold directory information, you can create a FERPA hold through your Student Center by following these instructions

Here at the Law School, students will be asked about two FERPA-related waivers. Both appear in the "My Student Info" portal on the Law School website and can be accessed at any time during the Law School career.

The first is the Biography Waiver. Students are asked to complete a biography, typically accompanied by a photo taken the first week of class. If you have elected any FERPA holds pursuant to the process above, the Law School will not display your biography and photo, and the Biography Waiver gives you the opportunity to waive any FERPA holds for the sole purpose of displaying your biography and photo. If at any time students want to adjust their choice, they may do so in the "My Student Info" portal.

The second is the Recommendations/References Waiver. Students may ask faculty or staff for letters of recommendation or to provide character references. In such cases, faculty or staff may wish to disclose educational records - such as grades, class rank or standing - pertinent to the request. The waiver allows for students to elect whether faculty or staff can disclose this information. If at any time students want to adjust their choice, they may do so in the "My Student Info" portal.

For more information on student privacy rights, see the University Registrar's Office FERPA website.

Any questions about FERPA can be directed to the Law School Registrar
