Paper extensions beyond the final exam period are generally disfavored. In extenuating circumstances, students may request an extension. Such extensions are within the instructor's discretion and are not guaranteed. Students should refer to their course syllabus for guidance on whether an extension for an assignment or paper is allowed. In the case of anonymously-graded assignments, or when explicitly directed to do so by the instructor, students may contact the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs to request an extension.

Paper Extensions (Incompletes)
If an extension is granted, the instructor and student should establish a reasonable deadline extension, which is usually within 30 days of the original deadline. In extenuating circumstances, the instructor may grant an extension of one full semester. A further extension of an additional semester may be granted only if "a student individually justifies the need for such an extension based on illness or other serious change of circumstances." Law School Rule 6.01(4)(a).
Students who fail to complete the course and/or do not meet the extended deadlines may receive an F in the course. Law School Rule 6.02.
Students who receive an incomplete are ineligible for Dean's Honor List in that particular semester. Law School Rule 8.05.Graduating students should be aware that requesting an extension may delay their graduation timeline. Additionally, students under the jurisdiction of the Retentions Committee may not request an extension. Law School Rule 6.01(4)(d).
