Student Organization Funding and Student Travel Funding
JD Grants Committee
Law School funding of student organization events and student travel is centralized in the JD Grants Committee, which was created by the Dean in 2014 to ensure a fair, consistent, and transparent process for distributing law school funds. JD students and registered student organizations must direct their funding requests to the committee, not to Law School programs, departments, faculty, or administrators.
For more information about JD grants funding for student organization events or student travel, visit the JD Grants website.
Student Bar Association
The Student Bar Association (SBA) has limited funding available each year for Law School registered student organizations' events. Each fall, the SBA will email the presidents, editors-in-chief, treasurers, and business contacts for all Law School registered student organizations with more information about the process for requesting SBA funding for their student organizations.
Campus Funding for Student Organizations
The Finances section of the Student Organization Resource & Policy Guide shares various campus sources of funding for student organizations.
Fundraising
If your organization would like to hold a fundraiser, there are a few campus and state requirements to be aware of.
- Review the Fundraising section of the Finance Guide in the Student Organization Resource & Policy Guide.
- Consult with the Assistant Director of Student Life. All fundraising activities that take place in the Law School must be approved by the Assistant Director of Student Life.
- If you are selling merch, review the University and Law School Trademarks page of the Student Handbook to determine if your merch is using UW copyright material and learn how to obtain permission to use UW copyright material.
- If you are selling food as part of your fundraiser, you must obtain a permit from UW Environmental Health & Safety. Permits take two weeks to process and must be approved before the fundraiser.
- If you want to solicit funds from organizations not affiliated with the University, such as a law firm, you must have approval from the Dean of External Affairs. First, consult with the Assistant Director of Student Life, who will elevate your request if appropriate.
