Pet Policy & Service Animals

Pets Prohibited in the Law Building

Dogs, cats, and other pets are not allowed in the Law building (or other University buildings), except as authorized by the chief administrative officer, pursuant to UWS 18.08(1)(a). Individuals in violation of this policy "may have the animal for which they are responsible impounded and be subject to the penalty provisions in s. UWS 18.13." UWS 18.09(1)(e).

This policy does not apply to service animals when those animals are working. 

Service Animals & Service Animals-in-Training

Service animals are permitted everywhere, including the Law building, without the need for an accommodation. Service animals-in-training are permitted in areas of the Law building open to the general public. See UW-145 Service Animals for more information.

You may be asked if the service animal is required because of a disability, and if so, what work or task the animal has been trained to perform, pursuant to the UW-Madison Office of Compliance's Assistance and Service Animal Decision Making Guide. 

Emotional Support Animals

Emotional Support Animals are not allowed in the Law building, unless approved as a reasonable accommodation by a University Disability Authority (i.e., McBurney Disability Resource Center, Employee Disability Resources Office/DDR, or the ADA Coordinator in the Office of Compliance) and the animal is approved to be in the Law building.
