The first time you activate and login to your 1Password account with NetID, you’ll link your first app or browser to your account. You can then use this app or browser to verify your identity when you sign in to new apps or browsers. The verification process is an essential part of making sure the secrets you store in 1Password are safe and encrypted end-to-end.

Step 1: Sign in on a new device

In the app

1. Open the 1Password app and select Sign In.

2. Select Enter account details.
3. Enter your work email and sign-in address, then select Next.
   • 
   • Be sure to update your sign-in address to uw-madison.1password.com!
4. Select Sign in with NetID Login. You’ll be redirected to login to NetID in your browser.

5. Sign in with your NetID and NetID password. 
6. After successfully signing in with your NetID, you’ll be redirected back to 1Password.
7. You’ll be prompted to acknowledge the enrollment by unlocking 1Password on any of your linked apps or browsers and entering a verification code.

     • The example image references Firefox which may not match your experience. A browser or app where you have already signed in will be referenced.
     • Step 3 will reference the device you are currently signing in from.

In the browser extension

1. Open your browser where the 1Password extension is installed.
2. Sign in to your account on uw-madison.1password.com.

3. You’ll be prompted to acknowledge the enrollment by unlocking 1Password on any of your already linked apps or browsers and entering a verification code.
   • Within your already linked app or browser:

4. Enter the verification code and Submit on the "Enter verification code” prompt.
5. The 1Password Browser Extension will open a prompt. Choose Add in the “Add account to 1Password” prompt.

6. Choose Allow notifications to get a verification code when you sign in on another app or browser.

7. Signing out or clearing your browser cache may require you to repeat these steps. It is recommended you sign into a 1Password app on your computer or phone to ensure you always have somewhere to retrieve the verification key. If you are signed out of 1Password everywhere you will need to recover your account. 

On 1Password.com

On the new browser you want to authorize, sign in to your account on 1Password.com.

You’ll be prompted to acknowledge the enrollment by unlocking 1Password on any of your linked apps or browsers and entering a verification code.

It is recommended you sign into a 1Password app on your computer or phone to ensure you always have somewhere to retrieve the verification key. If you are signed out of 1Password everywhere you will need to recover your account. 

Step 2: Find your verification code

In the browser extension

1. After you sign in to a new app or browser, open and unlock the 1Password browser extension.
2. Select Transfer key on the “New app or browser found” pop-up. You’ll see the alphanumeric verification code.

3. Enter the verification code on the new app or browser.

   Don't share your verification code with anyone. UW-Madison support and 1Password employees will never ask for this code.

On 1Password.com

1. On a linked browser, sign in to your account on 1Password.com.
2. Select your name in the top right and choose My Profile.
   • 
3. Select View next to the new apps and browsers listed under Pending Sign-Ins.
4. Select Transfer key, then you’ll see the alphanumeric verification code.
5. Enter the verification code and select Submit.

   Don't share your verification code with anyone. 1Password employees will never ask for this code.

After signing in to your account on 1Password.com, your browser will be listed as a linked browser and can be used to verify additional devices, unless you indicated it was a public or shared computer.
