University Committee Meeting Minutes 2023-03-06

Chair Papp called the meeting to order at 1:01 pm.
The minutes for the meeting of February 27, 2023, were approved.
ASM has shared a resolution about contingency planning for class.
Bernard-Donals motioned, and it was seconded, to convene in closed session pursuant to Wis. Stats. 19.85(1)(c) and (f) to discuss a committee appointment at 1:15.
Papp motioned to reconvene in open session at 2:06. It was seconded and approved.
Heather Daniels, Secretary of the Faculty, presented a proposed change to commencement and the awarding of honorary degrees. Honorary degrees would be recognized on Saturday and would not provide remarks. Speakers at the Friday Commencement ceremony would be a Hilldale award winner and a graduating doctoral or professional student. The speakers could be selected by the Graduate School Dean’s Student Advisory Committee. The University Committee was generally in favor of trying this new arrangement out.
Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin indicated that there are plans to hold a campus event to honor Chancellor Emerita Rebecca Blank this summer. She welcomed thoughts on what would be meaningful.
The search and screen committee for the Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications will be announced and have its first meeting this week. The Provost search and screen committee is reviewing candidates and identifying semi-finalists.
The Legislative Audit Bureau is planning to do a remote work audit concentrating on space management and security. The current timeline is for completion in the fall of 2023. UW System will likely collect information from all the campuses.
President Rothman is planning to bring a tuition increase of 5% to the March Board of Regents meeting. He has been in dialogue with the campuses about his plans. On the UW-Madison campus, the increase would be 3.9%. There is also a tuition differential for nursing that will be going for approval.
Governor Evers capital budget proposal includes everything UW-Madison asked for, which is approximately $429 thousand in state support with the remainder of the funding coming from gifts and bonds. Included in the proposal are the engineering building, Shell, utilities projects, Music Hall renovation and relocation/consolidation of the Art Department.
