Chair Li called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm.
The minutes from July 8, 2024, meeting were approved by automatic consent.
Lori Reesor, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, shared that there are two difference processes for conduct: one for student organizations and one for individual students. UW-Madison doesn’t currently require advisors for student organizations but will starting this fall.
UW-Madison’s protest guidelines were written about protesting speakers. Vice Chancellor reported they are working on several things this summer including pulling together existing policies about protests, revamping the Registered Student Organizations conduct process, revamping expectations regarding bias incidents, and a new module for new students on free expression.
Ruben Mota, ADA Coordinator, and Mari Magler, Director of the McBurney Center, shared information on a new policy for visitor accommodations. Visitors to campus are protected by the same parts of the law as students. They have a Visitor Access Consultant who will help implement this policy, and they plan to request that people put a generic statement about accommodations on their event posters.
Bernard-Donals motioned, and it was seconded and approved, to convene in closed session pursuant to Wis. Stats. 19.85(1)(c) and (f) to discuss waivers at 2:08 pm. Two tenure clock extensions and three dual role waivers were approved.
Stein motioned to reconvene in open session at 2:29 pm. It was seconded and approved.
Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin shared that the finalists for the Vice Chancellor for University Relations are visiting campus during the next week. She had a discussion with the University Committee about the balance of Title VI and free speech. There was a suggestion to hold an event exploring this topic in the fall with several sponsors including the University Committee.
Li adjourned the meeting at 3:14 pm.
