ResearchDrive - Mounting a Drive
This document contains instructions for connecting to a PI ResearchDrive.
Before Connecting to a Drive...
- You must be connected to the Biochem Network to access both ResearchDrives and the Shared Drive. You can do this in the following ways...
- Connect to the wired network in a Biochemistry building
- Connect to Eduroam wireless
- Connect to the Biochemistry VPN (see VPN - Connecting to the Biochemistry VPN)
- For ResearchDrive, you must be granted access by Biochem IT before connecting (see Get Help from Biochemistry IT!).
MacOS
- Open the Finder
- Open the Go menu and choose Connect to Server
- Enter the server address: smb://research.drive.wisc.edu
- Log in with your NetID and NetID password
- Select the PI's NetID for the ResearchDrive you wish to connect to
- The drive will open and be accessible in the Finder
Note: You will need to re-mount the drive each time the computer restarts.
Windows
- Open the File Explorer
- Right click This PC and choose Map Network Drive...
- In the Folder: field, enter \\research.drive.wisc.edu\PINetID, where PINetID is the NetID of the PI
- Select Connect using different credentials
Note: If you logged into the computer with your NetID credentials, you do not need to select this option. - When prompted, sign in with your NetID@wisc.edu email address and your NetID password
- Click Finish
- The drive open and be accessible in the File Explorer under This PC
Linux
Desktop
- From the sidebar in a desktop window, choose Connect to Server
- Enter the server name: \\research.drive.wisc.edu
- Use your NetID for the Username
- Domain Name: wisc.edu or ad.wisc.edu
- Use your NetID password
- Click Connect
- Choose which share you would like access
Server
Biochemistry IT can configure managed servers to automatically mount ResearchDrive. The Biochemistry Computation Cluster and managed lab servers are configured this way. You should be able to access your lab's storage by visiting: /mnt/rdrive/<PI NetID>
iOS / iPadOS
iOS and iPadOS include server capabilities within the Files app.
- In the Files app, choose Browse at the bottom
- Tap the ... option
- Choose Connect to Server
- Enter the server address: research.drive.wisc.edu
- Click Connect
- Select Registered User (it should be selected by default)
- Use your NetID@ad.wisc.edu username and your NetID password
- Click Next
- You should see a list of drives, select the PI's NetID for the desired ResearchDrive
Android
There are several apps available that are capable of connecting to the file server. For this example, we will be using Astro File Explorer. You can download it for free from the Google Play Store.
- After installing and opening the app, tap the plus (+) sign next to the Storage Locations
- Choose SMB Server
- Enter \\research.drive.wisc.edu\PINetID in the Server field, where PINetID is the NetID of the PI
- Log in with your NetID@ad.wisc.edu email address and your NetID password
