Top Hat Presentation Accessibility and Usability Information

The Top Hat Presentation tool is a desktop application used for polling students. It is meant to float inconspicuously above other presentation software to allow instructors to ask students questions as they present. This document summarizes the accessibility and usability barriers identified during testing as well as how to get help. This evaluation was only on the instructor/admin view of Top Hat Presentation. A student view evaluation will be added to this document when it is completed in spring 2024.

Accessibility and usability barriers

The following information is provided to help people with disabilities know what potential barriers may exist.

Magnification barriers create difficulties perceiving information for some users, such as people with low vision

The Presentation desktop application does not allow for any magnification and has very small text (below 12pt). Trying to download the Presentation app also presents some barriers with magnification.

Lack of keyboard-only access creates difficulties for some users, such as people with motor difficulties

The Presentation app does not allow for keyboard access. All interactions require the use of a mouse.

Color contrast barriers and very small text create difficulties for users with low vision and people who are color blind.

Much of the text in the application is gray text on a white background that does not pass color contrast standards. Additionally, the text is small and a user is not able to increase the size.

Screen reader barriers create difficulties for users who are blind, have low vision, or who use assistive technology.

Not all buttons have labels, creating a confusing experience for a screen reader user. Critically, the close and escape interactions only announce that they are “buttons” but do not describe them.
