What is the difference between "staff" and "faculty"?
An individual's employee category can typically be found in their appointment letter. However, below are the UW system's official definitions of staff and faculty members.
Staff
The staff employee category is comprised of employees in non-faculty positions which are unique to higher education. These positions are either fixed term renewable or fixed term with a defined end date. See the UW statute for an expanded definition.

Faculty
The faculty employee category within the University Personnel System is limited to those who hold one of the following ranks in an academic department or its equivalent in a UW institution:
- Professor
- Associate Professor
- Assistant Professor
- Instructor
There are two types of faculty appointments:
- Probationary: an appointment by the Board of Regents upon the affirmative recommendation of the appropriate academic department, or its functional equivalent, and the chancellor of an institution and held by a faculty member during the period which may precede a decision on a tenure appointment
- Tenure: an appointment for an unlimited period granted to a ranked faculty member by the Board of Regents upon the affirmative recommendation of the appropriate academic department, or its functional equivalent, and the chancellor of an institution via the president of the University of Wisconsin System

Eligibility questions
Any software that you are eligible for will appear after you log into the Campus Software Library.
- Emeritus faculty and retired staff are not eligible for most software titles (including Microsoft and Adobe titles).
- For antivirus for emeritus faculty and retired staff, refer to Security - Available Antivirus Software for Personally Owned Devices.
- Employees of UW-Hospital are not eligible for most or all of the software listed.
- Employees outside of UW-Madison are not eligible for most or all of the software listed.
- If you believe you are eligible for a particular piece of software and it does not show up, please email licensing@doit.wisc.edu to confirm eligibility.
Adobe Creative Cloud installers
Faculty and staff have access to Adobe Creative Cloud software through federated login.
There are no pre-built Adobe installers on the CSL. IT staff can request access to the Adobe Enterprise Admin Console to build installers by emailing their NetID to adobe at g-groups.wisc.edu You can build custom installers there with a variety of options.

Microsoft 365 installation
Microsoft 365 is not hosted on the CSL. Faculty, staff, and students have access to Microsoft Office through the Microsoft 365 portal.
Site-licensed Microsoft software
Access to site-licensed Microsoft and other software intended for installation by IT staff is available on the CSL if requested.IT staff can request access to that software by emailing microsoft at g-groups.wisc.edu with their NetID.
Log in to the Campus Software Library
The software available to faculty/staff and students on the UW-Madison Campus Software Library is listed below in alphabetical order. Open the panels for each tool to learn more about vendor, compatibility, licensing eligibility, and alternative access.
Additional software may be available to staff who placed orders for departmental software through the Software Order Form. For instructions, please refer to Using the Software Order Form to Purchase Departmental Software. That software will be available to download after customer clicks the "Your Downloads" or "Microsoft Select" that will appear for them on the CSL home page.
