Beginning March 2019, Google changed its terms of service for its Google Voice service to no longer allow G Suite for Education users to create a free phone number using their education email address.
Impact on UW-Madison G Suite customers
UW-Madison G Suite customers can no longer use their @wisc.edu email address to create a Google Voice number. Individuals who created a Google Voice phone number with their @wisc.edu email address prior to this change can continue to use their number indefinitely, according to Google.
Google Voice is not considered a core service and is not supported by the UW-Madison G Suite team or by the vendor, Google. If existing UW-Madison G Suite Google Voice customers need support, they will need to reference Google’s support documentation: https://support.google.com/voice/?hl=en#topic=1707989 .
Below are tips for requesting a new phone number based on type of need:
- Personal: Create a free Google Voice phone number using a personal Gmail account. (Unsupported)
- Work: Request a new phone number for a work related purposes from the Cisco VoIP team. Learn how to request a number. (Supported)
Please feel free to contact the UW-Madison G Suite team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
