Effective November 21, 2023, the Google Photos app will no longer be available for new UW-Madison Google accounts. This change is aimed at prioritizing the use of campus pooled Google storage for core apps. If your Google account was created before this date, you'll still have access to Google Photos until further notice. This change is in response to Google's decision to end unlimited storage.

Google Photos is a non-core app, which means it is not covered under the Google Workspace for Education terms of conditions. Support for non-core apps is limited and provided on a best-effort basis. Although Google Photos is a non-core app, content stored in this service continues to use shared campus Google storage, which can affect how we offer storage tiers.

FAQ

How do I know when my account was created?

  • Your UW-Madison Google Workspace account was created when you activated your NetID and became eligible for the service.

What is the difference between saving photos and videos in Google Photos compared to Google Drive?

  • Google Drive is a core app that supports multiple file types including photos and videos.

  • Google Photos is a non-core app that can be used to store, edit, and backup only photos and videos.

Where should I store my photos and videos?

  • If you are actively sharing and collaborating on photos and videos, My Drive or shared drive can continued to be used.

  • If you need a location to backup or archive photos and videos, please consider using another storage provider. Google Drive is intended for actively shared and collaborative files and should not be used for backup or archival purposes.
