Orientations for New L&S Employees and Chairs

This document describes orientations and development opportunities designed to help members of the Letters & Science community.
The College of Letters & Science has developed orientation programs to help its faculty and staff to understand and navigate daily life in UW-Madison's largest and most complex college. These programs complement campus-level programs organized through the Office of Human Resource Development

Letters & Science New Employee Orientation

Frequency: Once each semester
Content: This interactive session was developed to give new (and not so new) Letters & Science employees an overview of UW-Madison’s largest college. Topics covered in this session include Letters & Science’s campus role, mission, departments and programs, staff roles and work environment. This is an opportunity to meet other college employees, ask questions about how things work, and learn about resources and tools that are available.

Letters & Science New Chairs/Directors Orientation

Frequency: Annual
Content: The Letters & Science New Chairs/Directors Orientation series was developed to help first-time chairs/directors in their new roles within the college.  Sessions are interactive and cover topics such as department budget basics, key college contacts, coping with common problems.

UW-Madison New Employee Orientation

Frequency: First Wednesday of every month
Content: This session provides an overview of the campus and its history, ways to network, the resources available to campus employees, and UW-Madison's strategic priorities. Registration is required; there is no fee for this program.

Chairs Chats

Frequency: Monthly each semester
Content: Confidential discussions designed by and for department chairs with an eye toward themes that contribute to surviving and thriving as a chair/director.  Sessions are typically held over lunch at the University Club with topics announced in advance through the Office of Human Resource Development web site.
