College of Letters & Science 2022-23 Advising Awards

The deadline for the 2022-2023 Advising Awards was February 24, 2023. The next call will be sent out in January 2024.

Advising is critical to student success.  These annual awards acknowledge the importance of undergraduate and graduate student advising; they allow the College to recognize and reward the exemplary work of academic staff and faculty involved in providing this vital service to our students.

There are various types of advisors in the College of Letters & Science.  Academic Staff departmental advisors generally work with students interested in specific academic majors and certificates helping them with a wide range of concerns, including degree requirements.  Other professional Academic Staff advisors are often more generalist advisors or career advisors.  They may, for example, work with students who have not yet declared their major or advise students regarding potential career paths.  Such advisors may be found in Academic Advising Services, the Center for Academic Excellence, the Honors Program, or, SuccessWorks.  Faculty departmental advisors may do much the same, but may also advise graduate students, mentoring and guiding them through their graduate programs.

Four L&S Advising Awards will be conferred, each includes a minimum monetary award of $2,000. Awardees will be recognized at the annual L&S staff awards celebration on April 26, 2023. One award will be granted in each of the following two categories for undergraduate student academic or career advising: Early Career Advising Excellence Award (0-7 years working in L&S, $2,000 award) and Mid-Career Advising Excellence Award (8 years or more working in L&S, $3,000 award). One award will be granted for graduate student advising: Graduate Student Advising Excellence Award ($3,000 award). In addition, the committee will select a Distinguished Achievement Award (all nominees are eligible, $3,000 award).

Any questions can be directed to L&S Assistant Dean Nathan Phelps at (608) 263-6504 or nathan.phelps@wisc.edu.
