Canvas - Holds for UHS Courses [UW-Madison]

This document describes how academic holds (also known as service indicators) are removed for students in UHS courses.  These courses typically include AlcoholEdu, Our Wisconsin, and Graduate and Professional Students Preventing and Responding to Sexual and Relationship Violence, but there can be others.  This document also addresses how to troubleshoot potential issues with the hold removal.

How are holds lifted?

Holds are automatically lifted once the student completes the UHS course.  The holds are removed by the Hold Integration System Software (HISS). While the hold lift is automated, it is not instantaneous. HISS runs on a set schedule and hold removal can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours, depending on the data being processed.

Troubleshooting

If a student is calling the Help Desk because a UHS hold was not removed, it’s likely that HISS has not run yet. In this case, the student should wait and HISS will lift the hold once the batch has been completed.  If students are still reporting that their UHS has not been removed, they should contact the UHS course owner directly.  Contact information can vary depending on the course.  Students can find the contact information on the homepage of the course.
