Canvas - Requesting to Rename a Course [UW-Madison]

This document explains how to request to have a Canvas course renamed. It also explains limitations for renaming course.

Renaming For-Credit Courses

Canvas courses that originate from the Student Information System (SIS) should not be renamed. In Canvas, all for-credit courses receive their titles based on the designation entered in the SIS. If a course is listed incorrectly in SIS, instructors should contact their curricular representative to have this updated. The Learn@UW-Madison team will not make manual changes to the course name in Canvas.

If an instructor manually cross-lists courses in Canvas, only the name of the primary course will be preserved. For example, if English 140 (primary) and English 141 (secondary) are manually cross-listed, the title of the course will remain English 140 and will not reflect that there are English 141 enrollments in the course. To minimize confusion for students, instructors should let their students know that the courses have been cross-listed in Canvas.

Renaming Non-Credit Courses

If you are an instructor in a noncredit course, contact the DoIT Help Desk to request that a noncredit course be renamed. They can direct the request to the Learn@UW-Madison team, who can rename noncredit courses.

Note: Sandbox courses must always include "Sandbox" in the title. If you'd like to convert a sandbox course into a student-facing course, please request a new non-credit course from the Non-credit Canvas Course Request Form, and select one of the other course types.
