Sending Mail from your Computer Sciences Address

The CSL has set up an authenticated SMTP server at smtp-auth.cs.wisc.edu to allow you to send email from your Computer Sciences address. For security reasons, this uses a unique token instead of your CS password.

Creating/Resetting Your Email Token

You can create/reset your email token using our Generate Email Token page.

Clicking the “Generate Token” button will generate a new token and invalidate any existing token. If you had already configured an account, you will need to update it with the new token.

Configuring your SMTP connection

  • Server: smtp-auth.cs.wisc.edu
  • Port: 587
  • Connection Security: STARTTLS
  • Username: <Computer Sciences Email Address>
  • Password: <Email Token>

Using your Computer Sciences Username/Password will result in an invalid username/password error from the mail server. You must use your Computer Sciences Email Address and the generated Email Token.

If “STARTTLS” is not configured, the server may return the error “relay access is denied”. If you see this error, ensure that “STARTTLS” is configured.
