Ensemble Coordination-Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition Guidelines

Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition auditions occur during the fall semester of odd-numbered years.

1.    Eligibility

1.1. The UW–Madison Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition is open to full-time students at UW-Madison who play instruments from the brass, percussion, woodwind, harp, and piano areas. 
1.2. Full-time is defined as freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are registered for at least 12 credits. Graduate students must be enrolled in a degree program and making satisfactory progress. 
1.3. Students competing must be enrolled in a Mead Witter School of Music auditioned ensemble during both semesters of the academic year in which they are competing. 
1.4. Previous winners are not eligible. 
1.5. Musicians who have been named a winner in one of the School of Music Large Ensemble Concerto Competitions are not eligible to compete in a second competition during the same year.

2.    Competition Format

2.1. The Competition takes place in a single round. 
2.2. Each performance will be allowed the duration of one complete movement, no greater than 10 minutes. (At the conclusion of 10 minutes, the soloist will be stopped without penalty.)
2.3. The judging panel will be comprised of:
    2.3.1. UW-Madison faculty and professional musicians
    2.3.2. UW-Madison faculty and professional musicians whose students are finalists may not be members of this panel.
2.4. A piano accompanist is not required. 
2.5. One winner is selected to perform the concerto in its entirety. 
2.6. Students will need the permission of their applied studio teacher to compete. 

3.    Repertoire

3.1. Students are required to compete with a concerto originally composed for solo and wind band.
3.2. Accompanists are not required for this competition but are encouraged. A UW-Madison faculty member may not accompany. Click here for a list of available accompanists.

4.    Winners

4.1. One winner will be selected to perform their complete work with the Wind Ensemble during the Spring Semester.
