Faculty & Instructional Staff Onboarding Resources

Welcome to the School of Human Ecology!

You are joining a dedicated group of faculty and staff working together to improve the lives of children, families, consumers, and communities through innovative teaching, research, and public service.

As you start your new position, you may find the following onboarding timeline and resources helpful. Your onboarding team is also available to help with any questions.

Onboarding Timeline

As Soon As Possible

Activate your UW NetID

Your NetID is your digital login for many UW services, such as your email and time and absence reporting, and will be used for several other tasks during your onboarding process.

If you do not already have a UW NetID

You will need to activate your NetID using the activation key in the email from SoHE HR (Nancy Andrews or Kyle Brown).

If you already have a UW NetID from a previous appointment or academic enrollment

You will need to modify your NetID to ensure that you have access to all of the appropriate services for your new appointment. After logging in with your NetID, click the "Activate Services" button.

If you need assistance with your NetID, contact the Department of Information Technology (DoIT) Help Desk.

Complete your Criminal Background Check

Employment at UW-Madison is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check, which will be facilitated by UW-Madison contracted third party vendor HireRight. You will receive a separate email from HireRight with instructions to provide information and consent through HireRight's secure background check website. You will need to log in to provide additional information and consent to the check.

Prior To Your Start Date

Plan your commute

Explore the UW Transportation Services website for information about transportation options and parking permits. If you wish to apply for a parking permit, please contact Nancy Andrews.

Review list of acceptable I-9 documents

Review the Form I-9 Acceptable Documents list to determine which type of original identification document(s) you will bring on your first day of work. Please send questions to Kyle Brown.

Request course textbooks

If you are teaching, notify Abby Putnam and Michelle Hamilton if you need an instructor copy of any required textbooks for your courses.

Required textbooks should be added to your Faculty Center using the following instructions so that the UW Bookstore can order the books: https://kb.wisc.edu/8888

Meeting Scheduling

Your administrative onboarding team will contact you to schedule meetings throughout your first month in SoHE. This will include time with your department chair, associate deans, HR, instructional staff, etc.

Submit your SoHE website bio

Please fill out this form to create your bio page for the SoHE website. Please complete as much as you can, and upload a photo as described. You will be receiving an invitation to get your official Human Ecology headshot photo taken at a later date. Feel free to look through the website directory for examples and inspiration.
