Handshake for Graduate Students
Handshake was selected as UW-Madison’s primary recruitment and career event management tool, replacing BuckyNet and myECS. This document provides information about the tool.
All graduate students (except those in the School of Medicine and Public Health*) have access to and are encouraged to use Handshake. Questions should be directed to the student’s school/college career center.

Handshake makes it easy for every UW-Madison student to explore career events, connect to jobs and internships, and even schedule on-campus interviews.
With Handshake you can:
- Browse and register for career events on campus
- Explore thousands of jobs and internships from over 300K employers nationwide
- Get personalized job recommendations based on your degree program, interests, and more
- Manage your own campus interviews with top employers
We’ve preloaded your profile to get you started. Please note that your profile’s default setting is set to “hidden.” Employers, alumni, and students won’t be able to see anything until you choose to unhide it.
Here are the steps to get started:
- Read the Student Terms of Use.
- Go to MyUW
- Add the Handshake app to your homepage
- Launch to the app and start exploring!
Handshake is able to make personalized recommendations for students. Please encourage your students to complete the interest survey (shown below) when they activate their account to get the most relevant results from Handshake. They can update this interests survey at any time.
*Because the SMPH does not have a formal, centralized career services office, Handshake is not yet available to SMPH graduate students. The SMPH dean’s office is working with the Office of Undergraduate Advising and the Handshake team on a plan to make Handshake available to SMPH graduate students. In the meantime, SMPH graduate coordinators are asked to hold off on promoting Handshake to their students.
