Accessibility and usability barriers
The following barriers were identified in an accessibility evaluation of Big Interview and Big Resume, both the student experience and the staff Admin Mode experience. Please note this is not an exhaustive list of the barriers a user may encounter.
Keyboard navigation barriers
There are some interactive elements throughout Big Interview and Big Resume that can only be accessed by mouse. This is a blocker that could make some tasks extremely difficult if not impossible for keyboard users to complete, including using Big Resume to view a resume scan for feedback.
Other barriers that may impact keyboard users include illogical focus order and unexpected navigation patterns. For example, throughout the platform, content that is styled as “tabs” are actually links that load a new page when selected. This could be frustrating for users because upon selecting a “tab” link, the user’s focus restarts at the top of the page. There are also instances of low contrast focus outlines or no visual indication of focus.
Screen reader navigation barriers
There are some interactive elements throughout Big Interview and Big Resume that are not labeled or announced properly. This is a blocker that could make some tasks extremely difficult if not impossible for screen reader users to complete, including using Big Resume to view a resume scan for feedback.
Other barriers that may impact screen reader users include poor heading structure, poor error handling, lack of status announcements to confirm the success of user actions, and data visualizations that lack sufficient text alternatives.
Magnification and reflow barriers
There are some instances throughout Big Interview and Big Resume where content is pushed off screen or becomes extremely difficult to access at high levels of magnification due to overlapping elements, squished text inside tiny containers, and horizontal scrolling. This is a blocker that could make some tasks extremely difficult if not impossible for users with low vision to complete, including using Big Resume to view a resume scan for feedback.
Low color contrast and using color alone to convey meaning
There are some instances throughout Big Interview and Big Resume where text and interactive elements, including keyboard focus outlines, do not meet WCAG requirements for accessible color contrast ratios.
In Admin Mode, some data visualizations rely on color alone to convey meaning (for example, a color-coded data legend).
