When you begin using Canvas New Quizzes, be aware of the differences between Question Banks and Item Banks.

• In Classic Quizzes, when an instructor creates a Question Bank, and the question bank is associated with the course it was created in. Instructors and admins can copy Question Banks from one course to another, and the copied bank has no relation to the course it was copied from.

• Item Banks in New Quizzes work differently. Item Banks are associated with a user/instructor, not a course. You can have quizzes in multiple courses pulling questions from the same Item Bank. You do not need to copy Item Banks from one course to another course, all of your Item Banks are available in all of the courses where you have an instructor role. 

When you edit a question in an Item Bank, you will see the following reminder: 

• Edits made here will appear on any assessment using this question.
  
  

If you try and edit a question that students have already answered in any quiz, you will get this warning: 

• Some students have already submitted answers for this question! You can apply your edits to a copy of this question which will only be seen by students that have not taken the assessment.
  
  

When you select Edit a Copy, the connection between the item bank and the quiz that students have already taken will be broken.

• The edited version of the question will exist in the Item Bank.

• The previous version of the question will only be available in the specific quiz(zes) that students have already taken. 

You will not have a copy of the “old” question and the edited question in the same Item Bank; only a copy of the edited question.
