Canvas - Known Issue - Rotating PDF Deactivates Speedgrader Annotation Tools [UW-Madison]
Canvas Speedgrader deactivates annotation tools if a PDF is rotated in the doc viewer.
In Canvas Speedgrader, annotation tools become unavailable after rotating a PDF document. The built-in annotation tools are designed to work only when the document is set to the original orientation it was in when uploaded.
Affects
- Graders using annotation tools in Canvas Speedgrader to provide feedback
- Students who submitted a PDF file to Canvas in a sideways or upside-down orientation
Status
This issue is present as of 19 February 2026. The vendor considers this expected behavior and recommends the following workaround.
Workaround
If a document needs to be annotated, but was not oriented correctly when uploaded, ask the submitter to reupload the file in the correct orientation.
