Canvas - Known Issue - Annotation Comment Text Not Visible in DocViewer [UW-Madison]

If you are reviewing comments left on a PDF document using Canvas annotation tools, you must turn off dark mode to see the name of the person who left feedback.

When viewing comments left using annotation tools in the Canvas document viewer, the name of the person who submitted feedback may be invisible. This happens when dark mode is enabled on a device.

Affects

  • Graders using annotation tools in Canvas Speedgrader to provide feedback
  • Students viewing this feedback on the Grades page
  • People using dark mode on their computer

Status

This issue is present as of 19 February 2026. Learn@UW has reported the issue to Instructure.

Workaround

To view the hidden text, please turn off dark mode in your computer settings. 

If you do not wish to turn off dark mode, you can view the hidden text by highlighting it with your cursor.
