Canvas - Known Issue - HTML Editor Missing from Rich Content Editor [UW-Madison]
When editing pages in Canvas, typically it is possible to manually edit the HTML. However, the "code view" button is currently unavailable, so editing HTML is not possible.
Instructure, the makers of Canvas, have temporarily deactivated the HTML Editor button in the Rich Content Editor (RCE). The Rich Content Editor is Canvas's built-in text editor used to design content. They have done this intentionally to help Canvas remain stable.
Affects
- Anyone editing a page in Canvas, who would typically edit using HTML. This affects these parts of Canvas:
- Announcements
- Assignments
- Discussions
- Pages
- Quizzes
- Syllabus
- Note: The HTML editor is still available when editing New Quizzes.
Status
This issue is present as of 8 May 2026. The vendor, Instructure, is aware of this, but has not announced when they will return the HTML Editor option to the Rich Content Editor.
Workaround
At this time, please use the default view in the Canvas Rich Content Editor.
