Canvas - Known Issue: There was an Unexpected Error Creating the Discussion Entry

This document describes an error that occurs when trying to post a discussion response that contains an IP address.

    When posting a discussion response, students may see the message “There was an Unexpected Error Creating the Discussion Entry”. This will happen when the discussion post contains a link to an IP address, and should post successfully after removing the problem URL.

    Affects

    We have observed this error when students respond to a discussion with a post containing an IP address formatted as a link (for example, “https://192.168.1.1”).

    Status

    This issue is present as of July 1, 2026. The vendor is aware, but has explained that URLs containing IP addresses are currently blocked for security reasons.

    Workaround

    Check the text entry for a link following the format: https://<ip_address>. You can replace these links with an alternative URL, or delete the “http” or “https” heading to make it a non-functioning link.
