Ensemble Coordination-Irving Shain Piano and Woodwind Duo Competition Guidelines

Irving Shain Piano and Woodwind Duo Competition guidelines

 1. The competition is open to both graduate and undergraduate students currently enrolled in at least 1 credit hour at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

2. Students wishing to compete shall form duos – a pianist and a woodwind player.

3. The woodwinds shall include flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, and related instruments.

4. During the school year, each team will prepare a program of approximately 30 to 40 minutes in length featuring both the piano and the woodwind.

5. The competition is open to performance of any original or transcribed works for the intended ensembles. There shall be no restriction on selections for the repertoire. Though the donor did prefer materials embracing the general aesthetics of the tonal tradition, all choices will be valued. Proposed repertoire shall include both instrumentalists in substantive roles.

6. Two duos will be selected for a performance at a winner’s concert. Both parties must be available for the  competition and the performance in order to compete.

7. Two judges not affiliated in any manner with the Mead Witter School of Music will be responsible for determining the winning groups.

8. Each member of the two selected duos shall receive an award of $2,000 following their performance.

9. A culminating concert shall consist of two 30 to 40-minute segments, each performed by one of the two winning duos, and shall open to the public should health restrictions allow.  A reception may follow the concert so that the audience can greet and congratulate the winners.

10. All performers must follow current masking guidance at UW-Madison.
